Abstract
PharmAccount is developing an innovative module that integrates continuous medication counting into the BD PyxisTM MedStation to address inefficiencies and vulnerabilities in hospital medication management. Hospitals globally face challenges in preventing drug diversion, maintaining accurate medication inventory, and reducing administrative burdens on nursing staff. The current reliance on manual blind counts for controlled substances is time-consuming, susceptible to human error, and diverts resources away from patient care. With the global medication management market projected to grow by 7.66% annually until 2032, there is a clear demand for solutions that enhance inventory accuracy, regulatory compliance, and security. Our module features a durable, sterilizable plastic housing equipped with a load cell to calculate the weight, and, by extension, the unit count of stored medications. Combined with a shape memory actuator (SMA) for automated locking and unlocking of the module lid, our device offers a comprehensive solution. It provides real-time weight-based inventory updates, automated discrepancy alerts during loading or dispensing, secure locking mechanisms to prevent unauthorized access, and seamless integration with existing dispensing cabinet software for easy operation.
The device prototype will utilize 3D-printed PLA for the structural components, with key hardware elements including torsion springs for the lid hinge, compression springs for the ejection mechanism, and screws for secure assembly ($25.99). To measure weight, a 12- to 24-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) ($9.95) will process data from the load cell ($298). Nitinol wire ($9.99) will serve as the shape memory alloy (SMA) for the locking mechanism. All electronic components will be assembled on a breadboard, with an Arduino or Adafruit microcontroller ($10.32) managing system control. PharmAccount’s solution not only meets the clinical need for accurate and secure medication management but also aligns with hospital demands for cost-effective, scalable technology that prioritizes patient safety and operational efficiency.
