Abstract

Intravenous (IV) catheters provide an essential means for rapid, controlled drug delivery directly into the bloodstream, yet they also pose a serious risk of catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs). CRBSIs represent a significant clinical challenge, leading to patient complications, increased healthcare costs, and longer hospital stays. With a substantial market size of approximately USD 8.6 billion in 2022, the IV catheter market is expected to nearly double, reaching USD 17.8 billion by 2032 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.5%. This market growth highlights the increasing demand for safer, more effective catheter systems.

Catthergard is an innovative solution addressing the pressing need to reduce CRBSIs. It is an IV catheter connector system equipped with a built-in UV-C sterilization module. This system is engineered to reduce the risk of infections by sterilizing fluids with UV-C radiation before they enter the bloodstream, effectively targeting common pathogens such as S. aureus and E. coli. Key design features include a high sterilization efficacy, compatibility with standard catheter systems, low energy consumption, and ease of integration into clinical environments. These features make Catthergard an effective and practical choice for healthcare providers.

n terms of production, Catthergard is optimized for high-volume manufacturing through the use of biocompatible materials and scalable processes, such as injection molding for its components and commercially available UV-C LEDs. This cost-effective manufacturing strategy keeps the per-unit cost competitive with existing catheter connectors while enhancing patient outcomes and offering healthcare facilities a sustainable infection control solution. By combining clinical efficacy with manufacturing efficiency, Catthergard is positioned as a marketable, impactful device capable of reducing infection rates and improving healthcare delivery.
