Summary
Raytheon, an RTX business and a global leader in aerospace and defense, specializes in missile systems manufacturing, with operations based in Tucson, Arizona. Testing missile fin actuation under load is crucial for Raytheon but often consumes significant time and labor without directly enhancing the missile actuation systems. The team was tasked with designing a missile steering control actuation inertial load testing system, which applies a torsional load to the actuator, shaft and fin, and collects data to assess key performance parameters that meet aircraft control demands. The device accelerates and decelerates a motor fin assembly connected to an inertial load flywheel, increasing torque on the SCA system, while a PLC records data from a rotary encoder to calculate the required control parameters.
